How deep does this work box go inside?

Where there are 2x12 joists in the ceiling, the fan/heater unit is mounted there. The heater/fan unit's controlling switch is installed in a normal department electrical box (mounts inside 2x4 walls). For the heater, the fan, and the light, it includes switches.
